Three Industry Awards Presented to AEDP & City of Alexandria

(Alexandria, VA) — The Virginia Downtown Development Association (VDDA) and Site Selection Magazine have recognized the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership, Inc. (AEDP) and the City of Alexandria for their economic development efforts. VDDA presented AEDP with their Award of Merit for Business Development and Marketing and Site Selection Magazine recognized the City of Alexandria for a Breakthrough Deal and AEDP as a Top Groups Honorable Mention.

The VDDA recognized AEDP with an Award of Merit for Business Development and Marketing for the marketing piece entitled "Potomac West: Make It Your Business." Larry Watson, Business Development Manager for the AEDP, attended the VDDA Annual Conference and accepted the award on behalf of AEDP. The marketing piece, designed by Bremmer & Goris Communications, Inc. of Alexandria, highlights the unique features and special qualities which make Potomac West a great place to live and work. The idea behind the brochure is to increase the understanding of the Potomac West community throughout the Washington area.

Site Selection Magazine recognized Alexandria's Breakthrough Deal of the announcement of the relocation of the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (PTO) to Alexandria. This breakthrough economic development deal was recognized for Alexandria having put in place a master-zoning plan and public transportation improvements to seal the deal. The PTO headquarters in Alexandria will include 2.5 million square feet of space and employ over 7,000 when it is completed in 2003/2004.

AEDP received Top Groups Honorable Mention for its efforts in 2000 which impacted 9,369 jobs and had a $9.4 million positive tax impact for the City of Alexandria. Alexandria was noted as being part of the very good year for the Commonwealth of Virginia and economic development.

The VDDA mission is to bring attention to the significance of downtowns to Virginia's economic vitality and to enhance the effectiveness of organizations, individuals and communities to foster vibrant downtown economic development.
