AEDP Releases June 2006 Local Economic Indicators Report
(Alexandria, VA) – The June 2006 Local Economic Indicators Report (LEIRS) has recently been published and is now available for viewing on the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership, Inc. (AEDP) website. This detailed summary can be accessed at www.alexecon.org/leirs.html .
AEDP compiles these figures from numerous national, state, and local sources to provide a statistical measure of the economic health of the City of Alexandria. This newest report reflects figures compiled from the first quarter of 2006.
Job growth in Alexandria continues with close to 900 new jobs reported at the end of the third quarter of 2005 (the latest figures available). This figure represents a 3.3% job growth from the same quarter in 2004. Companies locating or expanding in the City during that time period include: HDR Architecture, Inc. (expansion), National Aeronautic Association (relocation),and Digipat (expansion and relocation).
Ridership at Alexandria metro stations also continues to grow. First quarter 2006 saw the opening of a second entrance to the King Street metro station, making it easier for residents and employees who work north of King Street to access the station. Many new riders are accessing the transit system via King Street each day; 834 more than were reported during the same month in 2005.
Finally, the number of passengers at nearby Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport continues to pick up at a considerable pace. The airport has experienced a 10% growth rate from one year earlier (April 2005 to April 2006), adding an additional 1.4 million passengers over the year. This is especially significant considering ridership at Dulles International Airport actually declined over the same period (due in part to the closing of Independence Air).
The Alexandria Economic Development Partnership, Inc. (AEDP) is a public/private partnership which plans, directs, manages, and implements efforts to attract and retain business operations in the City of Alexandria. AEDP has worked since 1981 as a facilitator to establish Alexandria as an internationally recognized community and business center.
